The F4U-1D Corsair was a late-war variant of the iconic Vought F4U Corsair, a carrier-capable fighter aircraft used primarily by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during World War II. Introduced in 1944, the F4U-1D featured several key upgrades over its predecessors, including the ability to carry underwing rockets and bombs, enhancing its ground-attack capability. It was powered by the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800-8W Double Wasp engine with water injection, producing over 2,000 horsepower, and could reach speeds over 400 mph (640 km/h). The 1D variant had a bubble canopy for improved pilot visibility and reinforced landing gear for carrier operations, although early Corsairs had difficulty with carrier landings, earning it the nickname “Ensign Eliminator.” With a combat range of over 1,000 miles and an armament of six .50 caliber machine guns, the F4U-1D excelled both as a dogfighter and as a ground-attack aircraft. It played a crucial role in the Pacific Theater, especially during the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and was instrumental in establishing air superiority over Japanese forces.
