The A-4E Skyhawk was an upgraded variant of the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, a compact, carrier-capable attack aircraft designed for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during the Cold War. Introduced in the early 1960s, the A-4E featured a more powerful Pratt & Whitney J52-P-6A turbojet engine, delivering about 8,500 pounds of thrust, which significantly improved its speed and payload capacity. It could reach speeds up to 673 mph (1,083 km/h) and carry an impressive array of ordnance, including conventional bombs, rockets, air-to-ground missiles, and nuclear weapons, with five external hardpoints. One of the most notable upgrades in the E model was the inclusion of an advanced navigation and weapons delivery system, as well as a dorsal avionics hump on many units to house additional electronic equipment. Despite its small size and simple design—originally intended to keep costs and maintenance low—the A-4E proved to be highly versatile, durable, and effective, especially in the Vietnam War, where it flew countless strike missions. Its agility and rugged construction also made it a favorite among pilots, and it remained in service with various air forces around the world for decades.
